Description: Small rectanglur pin marked with "Messiah Saskatoon 1913". Two attached small chains hold circular medallion 3.3 cm diameter. Front of medallion stamped George Frederic Handel over a bust of Handel. On the reverse: "Saskatoon Oratorio Society - founded 1913 - Canada". On the rim of the medallion: W. N. Sammis.

Notes: The Saskatoon Oratorio Society presented Handel's Messiah Dec 3 and 4, 1913 at the Third Avenue Methodist Church with nearly 200 voices involved in the production. A review of the event appeared in the Saskatoon Phoenix, Dec 4, 1913. Willis N. Sammis, whose name is engraved on the rim of the medallion, was in the bass and baritone section of the choir. His wife, Olive, was also in the choir and appeared as a soloist. The Sammis family were American citizens. They came to Saskatoon in 1911 and returned to the United States around 1917. The bust was based on the statue of Handel from Vauxhall Gardens. In 1741 Handel wrote the "Messiah" oratorio working on it non-stop for 23 days.

B. Finley.

Notes: A copy of a Dec. 4, 1913 Saskatoon Phoenix newspaper article accompanies the photograph, with the headline "Handel's Messiah given with notable success: Oratorio Society, assisted by Winnipeg soloists, produce masterpiece of religious music in highly acceptable manner." The article also lists the choir members and states that Fred Gee was the organist and Miss Phillips the pianist.
